Central Commission's on Minimum Wage Report Proposed 1.8% Up for 1998 Prefectural Minimum Wage

The Central Commission on Minimum Wage, chaired by Mr. Kazutoshi Kamiyo, held the 3rd Sub-Committee on Standardization on 21 and 22 Jul. 1998. The member from public service proposed its opinion that 1.8% up for all prefectures is standard for 1998 revision of prefectural minimum wage, and both employee and employer sides expressed disagreement. Nevertheless, the 144th General Assembly of the Central Commission on Minimum Wage submitted the report to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Ibuki, according to the public service member's proposal. The further deliberation continues at the Prefectural Commission on Minimum Wage.

Changing Mass Disposal Lifestyle for Environment
First Step from Trade Union Secretariats

RENGO set up its guideline for the environment called "Pressing National Movement development on Environment" at the 12th Central Executive Committee on 14 July 1998. The guideline calls union members and general public at trade union secretariats and all the working places to check and change mass consumption and mass disposal lifestyle toward national movement. RENGO invites the public to join the contest for the name and its symbol character of the movement.

RENGO and Local RENGO Stand Up to Judiciary

On the case of commitment of an act of obscenity to a subordinate female part time worker by a professor of Akita College of Agriculture, the Akita District Court delivered its judgment to order the female accuser to pay damages to the defendant on the basis of defamation of his character in Jun. 1994. RENGO Akita protested against the judgment and made a final appeal immediately to the high court, and RENGO is totally supporting this case. The 2nd hearing started on 4 Jun. , concluded on 22 Jun. and will deliver the High Court's judgment on 7 Oct.. Seeing the judgment day, RENGO President, Mr. Washio submitted a letter of request to the Akita Office of Sendai High Court toward the fair conclusion.

Anti-Nuclear Testing Peace Mission Dispatched to India and Pakistan

RENGO dispatched peace mission to India and Pakistan for persuasion not to continue further nuclear test nor development. The mission consisted of 6 RENGO members, namely, from RENGO head office, RENGO Hiroshima, RENGO Nagasaki and International Confederation of Free Trade Unions - Asia Pacific Regional Organization (ICFTU-APRO). It visited trade union and governmental offices in India and Pakistan to request the stoppage of the nuclear weapon development and exchanged opinions with unions, governments and journalists.

The main trade unions RENGO visited are as follows; Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions (APFTU), All Pakistan Federation of Labour (APFOL) and Pakistan National Federation of Trade Unions (PNFTU).
Being only people in the world to suffer the nuclear attack, to protect the world peace, the role of Japan is significant. Central and local governments, trade unions, A-bomb victim associations and NGOs should carry out each duty for abolition of nuclear weapons respectively and jointly.
RENGO peace mission requested and proposed following points.

  1. Stoppage of nuclear weapon development
    By handing out the letter of request and appealing tragedy of A-bomb attack, stoppage of nuclear weapon development was requested.
  2. Exchange of opinions for nuclear disarmament and permanent peace
    Trade unionists in India and Pakistan approved the request from RENGO mission, however, repeated appealing the nuclear policy of respective countries as "justifiable" or "unavoidable". The exchange of opinions turned more unavoidable.
  3. Participation in the RENGO peace rallies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August
    RENGO invited trade union leaders under ICFTU in the two countries to participate in the RENGO peace rallies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki held in August to touch peace movement in Japan.
  4. Cooperation to the opening A-bomb exhibitions in India and Pakistan
    RENGO requested the cooperation to the opening A-bomb exhibitions in the two countries and visited trade unions pledged full cooperation.
