The conference was held as integrated one of previous National Conference on Safety and Health Measures and Health and Safety Symposiums. At the opening, the General Secretary Mr. Sasamori appealed that working place was unsafe now and we had to keep a sense of crisis. Strengthening safety and health in labor is the most basic function of trade unions and building up the measure including unorganized workers is the task of RENGO. We would like to put the needs together into the RENGO's policy proposal."

GS Commented at the Starting of the Obuchi Cabinet to Change Economic Policy Immediately
(31 July 1998)
On 30 July the new Obuchi, of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), cabinet inaugurated succeed to the Hashimoto administration. The new cabinet is requested to change the old economic policy boldly and immediately, break the present economic crisis, restore Japanese economy and dissolve employment and living anxiety. The opposition parties should prepare policies on the bad credit issues and economic recovery to reach the best solution on the active deliberation. The LDP was not given the majority by the voters, however, the party earned the majority in the House of Representatives, where Mr. Obuchi was designated as Prime Minister, even though the Upper House designated Mr. Kan for it. The extraordinary session of the Diet will discuss on the issues as tax cuts, tax reform and amendment of Labor Standards Law those are related directly. We expect much of opposition parties to unite their actions with a broad view and sense of workers and general public. On top of that, we convince that general public requests opposition parties to unite for the momentarily coming election of the House of Representatives.
