Revise the Labor Standards Law for Workers requested at the 69th May Day by 1.5 mil. workers nationwide
(1 May 1998)

The May Day rally this year put the fighting spirit in front, by reviving the demonstration marches after the ceremony, and adopting the special appeal for actualizing Rengo's proposal kept an eye on the deliberation at the diet.

By the opening remarks, the chairman of the May Day Steering Committee Mr. Washio, as well as the RENGO President, stressed to open the way through that May Day against the unfair pressure of changing the Labor Standards Law for the worse under the severe employment conditions. Further more Mr. Washio strongly appealed to stop that unjust change of the Law, which threatened the basic right of workers because it did not put any upper limit for overtime-, holiday- and latenight-labors. Finally, Mr. Washio stated on the political issues appreciating the birth of the new Democratic Party, since the politics initiated by the Liberal Democratic Party was far from the one for workers in terms of the slow actions against the economic recession and the unjust change of the Labor Standards Law.
The May Day Central Meeting invited Mr. Ibuki, Minister of Labour, Mr. Aoshima, Governor of Tokyo, and representatives of political parties.
Following the ceremony, demonstration marches were held in 5 courses appealing for actualizing Rengo's proposal on the Labor Standards Law and the tax cuts to the citizens.
