Symposium on 21st Century Pension, Medical and Nursing

RENGO and other welfare and civic groups sponsored a joint symposium entitled "Let's talk Pension, Medical and Nursing Care in the 21st Century" on January 28 at the Seiryo Kaikan in Tokyo. The first half of the symposium consisted of commemorative lectures and panel discussions by scholars regarding social security in the 21st century. Participants discussed the nation's general anxiety over the future. Moreover, the participants requested each Diet member in charge of Social Security problems establish Safe and Reliable Social Security as soon as possible.
The cosponsoring organizations were RENGO, The Central Labor and Welfare Association, the Sawayaka Welfare Foundation, the Aged Society Cultural Association and the 10000 citizen's Civic Committee for Fostering the Socialization of Nursing Care.

Joint Appeal "Forum for Correcting Differentials"

On February 1, at the Ikenohata Cultural Center in Tokyo, RENGO held its "Forum for Correcting Differentials, '99 Spring Struggle" which aims to close gaps in working conditions for workers in small to mid-sized businesses and non-affiliated workers. 250 participants gathered from affiliated organizations of the Small to Mid-Sized Joint Struggle Center and major unions in Kanto area bloc. They exchanged information and discussed issues based on their practical experience gained at affiliated organizations.
In the case study report for the struggle over differential corrections, The Japanese Electrical, Electronic and Information Union, Confederation of Japan Automobile Workers' Unions, and the Japan Association of Metal Machinery and Manufacturing Workers explained the wage fact-finding survey conducted on 200,000 workers. In addition, Manager Matsuo of the Fair Trade Commission gave a lecture on "trade business between firms under the operation of the Subcontract Law."
After an active exchange of experiences and opinions, participants pledged to fight for victory at the 1999 Spring Struggle, and adopted the following appeal to the forum. "We will squarely face the many problems of pay raises, shorter working hours, securing employment and the enactment of the Basic Law for Promoting Key Technology for Production."

New Liaison Office with Liberal Party Open
Toward the 145th Ordinary Diet Session

On February 2, RENGO opened a liaison office with the Liberal Party, this following the opening of similar offices with three other opposition parties at the end of January. RENGO requested that Liberal Party carry out its important policy demands at the 145th ordinary diet session.
RENGO asked for cooperation at the current Diet session in achieving their demands for creating jobs, establishing fair working rules and a social security system, tax cuts and tax reform. In response, the Liberal Party answered "We will work to meet your expectations fully on the Dispatched Labor Law Amendment and to establish a Basic Law for Promoting Key Technology for Production." Furthermore RENGO and Liberal Party agreed to open a liaison office in future as long as necessary.
