photoWith a slogan of "action and power toward the 21st century," Rengo held its 6th biennial convention in Tokyo, 14 to 15 October. The Convention marks 10th anniversary of Rengo and adopted the action policies toward the 21st century. The Convention also re-elected Mr. Washio to President, Mr. Enomoto to Deputy President and Mr. Sasamori to General Secretary. It came to an end with the adoption of a resolution below.

Resolution of the Rengo 6th biennial Convention

At the occasion of its 10th anniversary, Rengo holds the 6th biennial Convention and adopts action policies for the next two year, holding up a slogan of "Actions and Power toward the 21st century."

The action policies confirm that Rengo should aim at building a labour-centered welfare state based on yutori (affluence), fairness and solidarity. Rengo will lead the social reform within the capacity of representing all working people by reinforcing its activities and expanding the membership.

The highest priority should be given to solving the insecurity about employment and livelihood caused by prolonged stagnation. Actions should be taken in a bold and steady manner to realize the stability in employment and livelihood. They should include economic recovery, job creation, the improvement of welfare and social security, long-term environmental policy, gender equality and educational reform.

Market fundamentalism has been rampant under the globalization. Leaving everything to the market will widen the social disparity and then will hinder the vitality of economy. Rengo will stop the trend in favor of efficiency and competitiveness and will face up squarely to the "careless" restructuring even if considered unreasonable or obstinate. Rengo will proceed with the establishment of fair work rules, workers rights protection and social safety nets with keywords: anshin (relief), antei (stability) and anzsen (safety).

There is about a year left before the 21st century.

We are now in the period of the coalition government. The Liberal Democratic Party and the Obuchi Cabinet has formed the coalition government aiming only at the numerical power, without taking any appropriate measure to overcome the worst employment situation in the history. Rengo will form the Rengo Politics Center to organize new political activities. Rengo will make its best effort to realize a change of regime by a political force with the Democratic Party of Japan as a leader.

The situation surrounding working people has been drastically changing for the past 10 years. It is urgently necessary to reconstruct the framework of the 20th century in economic and political terms. We will heighten our social status through participating at the enterprise, industrial and national levels. We will challenge to create our own future toward the 21st century.
