For Realization of Quality Medical Care
21st Century Central Rally on Medical Care and Nursing
(2 June 2000)

photoOn May 12, "Nursing Day," RENGO held its "21st Century Central Rally on Medical Care and Nursing" at the Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo, with approximately 1500 people in attendance. At the rally RENGO confirmed that it will make greater efforts to actualize quality medical care.

Representing the organizers, Secretary General Sasamori began his speech by sharply criticizing the government's intention to increase the average citizens' burden without sufficient reform. He said, "radical reform of the medical system and medical insurance system had resulted in a negative outcome."
He continued, "the declining birthrate and aging population will make it necessary to implement a system that the people who sustain it can bear the burden of supporting the elderly. No matter how much RENGO implores the government for the necessity of three true systems: taxation, social security, and employment, it never takes our pleas into consideration. Since the social system has not improved, there is increasing uneasiness over our future. Our mission is to collect that sense of crisis and to convey it to the government. We must raise our voices louder from now on. Let this rally be the place where we make a firm resolve to do so."

Finally, Secretary General Sasamori addressed the government and the Liberal Democratic Party's attempt to repress labor unions by prohibiting the check-off of union dues. He appealed to the 1500 participants for their cooperation in building a new government saying, "the current government's methods are against the people's interests. I ask you to go to the polls for any sake. Politics will change only if all of you union members go to the polls."

Further, along with the rally, RENGO conducted discussions with the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Vice President Yoshimi Morooka, Secretary General Sasamori and others from RENGO strongly requested that Shingo Haketa Administrative Vice-Minister for Health and Welfare make medical care system reform, unification of nursing system and other items. Following that, the party held a meeting to report its activities in front of the Ministry of Health and Welfare building.
