Thoroughly Condemn Political Corruption
Carry Out Angry Sit-in before the Diet
(9,16 February 2001)

On January 31, the opening day of the 151st Ordinary Diet session, RENGO conducted sit-in in front of the Diet. Approximately 1000 people gathered from affiliate organizations for the exceptional event of carrying out a sit-in on the opening day of the Diet. Also, more than 50 legislators from the Democratic Party of Japan and the Social Democratic Party rushed over to add their encouragement and all pledged to fight on to the end of the current Diet session.

At a rally following the sit-in, Secretary General Sasamori addressed the participants filling the front of the Diet saying, "RENGO's role is to speak for 53 million workers. Let us receive the citizen's voices and strive with all our might."
Afterwards, Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Naoto Kan, Social Democratic Party Secretary General Sadao Fuchigami, Liberal Party congressman Kohji Sato and others offered speeches of encouragement. Representatives from opposition parties each appealed by saying, "in order to thoroughly condemn corrupt politics and break prevailing anxiety over the future, let us pressure the ruling parties to step down with the collective force of the opposition parties."
At the rally, the following items were set as priority issues for the ongoing Diet session: (1)revise the budget to enable job creation, (2)establish a stable social security system, (3)pass the Career and Home Balance Assistance Law, and (4) thoroughly condemn political corruption. Further, they endorsed a plan to visit the Diet in session and conduct rallies.
