A Grand Design for 21st Century Labor Movement
10th Anniversary Symposium: Emphasis on "Delivering"

(16 March 2001)

One of the last projects of RENGO's 10th anniversary was the "Past, Present, and Future of Labor Movement" symposium held at a hotel in Tokyo on February 22. Among the many talks each speaker especially stressed the significance of "handing down the concept of solidarity as culture."

Keynote speaker Professor Toru Shinoda of Waseda University pointed out that "passing down the idea of social justice, which the labor movement has, to the next generation is itself a labor movement. Japan also needs to transform its culture from service-unionism to an organizing model," as he introduced a recent trend in the American labor movement. Following that, University of Shimane Professor Sadahiko Inoue and Japan Women's University Professor Ikuro Takagi raised issues and a panel discussion was held where young union leaders also participated.
Secretary General Sasamori concluded the discussions by reminding us that "the point is how to act toward reform. Let us re-affix the roles assigned to each level of organization and challenge reform with the keywords; anger, struggle, and action." RENGO and the ILEC (Institution of Labor Education and Culture) co-organized this symposium which was attended by 150 participants.
