For Stronger Japanese/Chinese Union Cooperation
Regular Meeting with ACFTU
(16 April 2002)
On April 16, RENGO held a regularly scheduled meeting with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) at RENGO headquarters. These meetings have been held annually since 1998 when exchange was established in the form of "regular meetings" by both organizations. Seven members from the ACFTU attended including Vice President Son and International Liaison Department Vice Manager Bai. Representing RENGO was President Sasamori, Deputy President Sakakibara, and fifteen other members who exchanged opinions on the Japanese tripartite structure system of politics, labor, and management. The ACFTU Delegates came to Japan for six days and visited several organizations including RENGO Headquarters, RENGO Hyogo, RENGO Osaka, and the Japan International Labour Foundation (JILAF).

Representing RENGO, President Sasamori greeted the visiting delegates with a speech that commemorated this year as the 30th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the two countries. He also touched upon some of the impressions he had during his recent visit to China last May. This year in September, various events are scheduled to mark the anniversary, including the sending of a delegation from affiliated organizations, as well as a delegation from local RENGO which have established sister city ties with cities in China. President Sasamori said that he expected that "those events will lead to a fortification of the partnership between both of our nations and unions." He further disclosed that in June RENGO will invite former ACFTU President Er, who has greatly contributed to the development of Japan/China Union partnerships, to Japan.

ACFTU Vice President Son referred to a monument jointly built by both the ACFTU and RENGO last February in Beijing that commemorates Japanese/Chinese Worker Friendship. Son stated that "the Friendship Monument is a firm foundation for mutual exchange between the labor worlds of both countries." He continued saying, "We want to strengthen friendly ties between us, founded on the base which has been established so far as well as a vision of the future."

Following the speeches, RENGO General Secretary Kusano and ACFTU Vice President Son each reported on their organizations' circumstances and activities. Other issues were discussed after that including the "Japanese tripartite structure system of politics, labor, and management," " Labor unions activities for health and safety in the workplace," and so forth. After the meeting RENGO hosted a reception dinner to celebrate the 30th anniversary and to deepen ties between the two organizations.
