RENGO, GENSUIKIN, KAKKIN Approach MOFA
Request 'Nuclear Disarmament' Resolution for UN
Committee
(15 October 2002)

On October 9, representatives from three organizations; RENGO, GENSUIKIN (Japan Congress Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs), and KAKKIN (National Council for Peace and Against Nuclear Weapons towards the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons and Construction of World Peace) visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). They delivered their requests for the draft resolution entitled "Toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons" which is to be submitted before the United Nations General Assembly. Knowing that the Japanese government is planning to submit a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly toward nuclear disarmament and achievement of lasting international peace, the three organizations asked that the government fight hard to see that the resolution is adopted by all the UN member nations.

RENGO Department of Organizational Affairs Executive Director Abe explained the contents of the joint request by the three organizations. He stated that "we are concerned about the trend to use nuclear weapons as 'weapons ready at hand' rather than a 'deterrent power'" and "as MOFA supporters, the three organizations strongly expect the United States to support the resolution."
MOFA's Biological and Chemical Weapons Conventions Division/Arms Control and Disarmament Division Chief Officer Furuya received the delegates from the three organizations. He said that the draft resolution would be based on the previous year's resolution and that the draft continues to include early effectuation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT.)
GENSUIKIN General Secretary Fukuyama and KAKKIN General Secretary Suda were also present at the meeting.
